Advanced Facilitation Workshop (AFW)

FNS Advanced Facilitation Workshops is a series of courses designed for those who have completed foundational facilitation training (e.g. SPOT on Facilitation, CSC FA101, IAL AFP, etc) and have gained some practical experience in facilitating groups to learn new methods, tools and techniques to expand your facilitation skills and toolkit.

Each course is half-day (unless otherwise indicated*), conducted on-site, practice-oriented and includes 360-degree feedback.

You will need to complete the pre-course work given and you will receive a course handout, additional reading materials and references.

TWC The World Café™ Based on seven integrated design principles, the World Café methodology is a simple, effective, and engaging format for hosting large group conversation productively.
  • Understanding the TWC principles, roles and process.
  • Designing questions for TWC.
  • Adapting TWC for different meeting scenarios.
  • Practice with 360-degree feedback.
OST Open Space Methodology™ Open Space Technology (OST) sessions where participants are invited to propose and discuss topics they are passionate about based on a proposed theme. The meeting agenda and schedule are created real-time by the meeting participants.
  • Understanding OST principles, law and process.
  • Crafting the Theme and Invitation.
  • Adapting OST for different meeting scenarios.
  • Practice with 360-degree feedback.
D2-PDR Design Facilitated Session Design facilitated sessions that achieve the intended meeting objectives, expected deliverables and desired outcomes. This course equips you with core skills needed to design (D2) a facilitated session for focus group discussion, corporate and strategic planning.
  • Understand the principles and critical success factors for designing effective sessions and achieving desired results through facilitation.
  • Learn the design considerations for facilitated sessions such as focus group discussion, corporate planning and strategic planning sessions.
  • Evaluate the results and impact of designs for improvements
  • Apply design principles and considerations with 360-degree feedback.
Process Design Review Uncover the tool and techniques of reviewing process designs to enhance the design of your facilitated sessions.
  • Be aware of some common failure modes when designing facilitated engagements.
  • Learn techniques for avoiding or minimising the risks associated with process design failure modes using Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
  • Review process designs to curate better designs.
FBI™ Facilitating Breakthrough Ideas Facilitate the generation of breakthrough ideas using FNS FBI Framework covering Formulate-Generate-Evaluate-Persuade-Activate. This course equips you with advance brainstorming tools and techniques such as Forced Connection, SCAMPER and TRIZ.
  • Formulate challenge statements.
  • Practise at least 3 generative techniques.
  • Practise at least 3 evaluative techniques.
  • Pitch your ideas to stakeholders to gain support.
  • Create action plans to implement prioritised ideas.
AI-SOAR Appreciative Inquiry Appreciative Inquiry is collaborative, strengths-based approach to change in organisations. It encompasses five distinct phases: Define-Discover-Dream-Design-Deliver. Explore how you can use AI in transforming organisations.
  • Understanding the principles, assumptions and process of AI.
  • Creating powerful questions for each AI phase.
  • Designing and facilitating AI experiences.
Strengths-Opportunities-Aspiration-Results Guided by Appreciative Inquiry principles, SOAR analysis is a strategic planning method for creating aspiration-oriented and result-oriented organisational strategies based on the organisation’s strengths and presenting opportunities.
  • Understanding the principles and process of SOAR.
  • Designing questions for each phase of SOAR.
  • Experiencing SOAR for strategic planning.
  • Applying SOAR with 360-degree feedback.
DF Dynamic Facilitation™ Dynamic Facilitation evokes “choice-creating,” a special quality of thinking where people use all their capacities to achieve breakthroughs on impossible-seeming issues.
  • Understanding the guiding principles and process of DF.
  • Comparing and contrasting it with other facilitation practices.
  • Practice with 360-degree feedback.
Future Search Future Search Future Search is a unique strategic planning method used world-wide by hundreds of communities and organisations. The method enables large diverse groups to:

  • validate a common mission
  • take responsibility for action, and
  • develop commitment to implementation.

FS brings a “whole system” of diverse stakeholders into the room to work on a common task-focused agenda, covering their past, present, and future, then discover common ground, and make action plans.

  • Understand the principles for helping large diverse groups plan and act on common ground:
    Getting the “whole system” in the room, Thinking globally before acting locally, Focusing on the Future and Common Ground and Self-Managing and Taking Responsibility for Action.
  • Experience the process that creates mutual learning amongst the different groups of stakeholders as a catalyst for voluntary action and follow-up implementation:
    • Focus on the Past: Creating share history of key events
    • Focus on the Present: Identifying the current trends and its impact on the discussion topic
    • Focus on the Future: Co-creating the ideal future that everyone desires to uncover common ground
    • Focus on Actions: Brainstorming strategies and actions for implementation
  • Be able to plan and conduct a Future Search session.
