MemoryLane: Where AI Meets Life Stories

In a world where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is often seen as a dehumanising force or a threat to our jobs, this moving CoP session showed how it can instead become a powerful enabler of human connection through storytelling.

The session, hosted by Facilitators Network Singapore (FNS) on January 18, 2025, was led by FNS’ supportive and inspiring Prabu Naidu who introduced us to MemoryLane. This AI-enabled platform can reinvent how we preserve and share our life stories through Genie, an AI confidante.

MemoryLane: Where AI Meets Life Stories

The Power of Digital Storytelling—A Founder’s Journey

Jason Tan, founder of MemoryLane and former Meta programmer, introduced us to his AI platform designed to help people capture their life stories.

The Power of Digital Storytelling—A Founder’s Journey

MemoryLane was born from a deeply personal place for Jason. He shared that MemoryLane emerged from his interest in life’s final chapter and what matters most to us when we are at the concluding phase of our life. The catalyst for Jason to start his own business came during COVID-19 and his desire to keep his father actively engaged from afar.

“We want to live in the hearts of the people we care about,” Jason explained, as he walked us through how the convergence of GPT technology and personal need led to MemoryLane’s creation. His vision resonated particularly in the context of Singapore’s ageing population concerns, where one in five people is over 65. The need for dignity and meaningful connection for seniors has never been more pressing.

The Science of Memory and Storytelling

The human brain, particularly the hippocampus, plays a fascinating role in forming and organising memories. This critical part of our brain weaves together different sensory experiences, from sights and sounds to feelings and emotions, creating rich, multifaceted recollections. MemoryLane’s design mirrors this natural process of memory formation.

The Science of Memory and Storytelling

Beyond Simple Memory Capture

MemoryLane transforms the way we preserve our life stories through its deep understanding of how memories interconnect. The platform’s accessibility makes it a natural fit for our fast-paced lives, enabling users to capture memories through quick text messages or voice recordings.

This approach works perfectly for busy professionals, parents and elders who find traditional journaling challenging. It also makes it entertaining and enjoyable for elders who want to share memories, but others may not have time to listen.

Our Shared Experience of MemoryLane

During our hands-on session and using a facilitation-oriented approach, we experienced firsthand how the platform works with our natural memory processes while making the entire experience effortless and engaging. What impressed us most was how seamlessly it fits into modern life:

  • The interface is intuitive and accessible for everyone, from Gen Alpha to seniors.
  • Users can capture memories through quick text messages or voice recordings, making it easy to document thoughts on the go, spending just a few minutes or hours if needed.
  • Photo uploads trigger additional memory prompts, drawing out forgotten details.
  • The AI weaves individual stories into a coherent narrative, much like our brain connecting different aspects of an experience.
  • The output feels natural and personal, maintaining an authentic, clear voice while helping transform brief inputs into complete, rich stories.
  • The flexibility to pause and resume anytime means you never lose precious memories during its creation process.

A Tool for Healing and Connection

The platform’s approach aligns beautifully with the principles of reminiscence therapy, a well-established practice that uses memory recall to promote psychological well-being. Through guided storytelling and reflection, reminiscence therapy has been shown to boost cognitive function, reduce depression, and enhance self-esteem, particularly among older adults.

A Tool for Healing and Connection

MemoryLane digitalises this therapeutic process, making it more accessible while maintaining its core benefits. Recalling and sharing life stories becomes not just a preservation of memories but a journey of self-discovery and healing.

The most powerful moment for me came during our drawing-sharing session. I became emotional as I talked about my recently departed Dad. I realised the platform provided a safe space to explore these memories, turning grief into a celebration of his life and can help me capture and preserve them for my children. I wasn’t alone in this experience, around the room, participants were deeply engaged in their journeys of discovery.

A Tool for Healing and Connection

The room’s positive energy and sense of discovery were palpable as the session concluded. Several participants were eager to begin their memory capture journeys, while others discussed potential applications in their facilitation practice and work.

Looking Forward

This CoP session demonstrated the tremendous potential of combining AI with human-centred facilitation. When technology often seems to distance us from one another, MemoryLane shows how AI can bring us closer together. As I left the session, I couldn’t wait to continue working on my family’s story. MemoryLane has given me a new way to honour my Dad’s memory. There is a meaningful intersection between AI and our shared humanity.

Looking Forward
